Heat-Related Heart Disease Deaths Expected to Nearly Triple

Though much of the northern hemisphere is currently experiencing the cooler temperatures of fall, experts are warning that new research shows rising summer temperatures will likely almost triple the number of heat-related cardiovascular deaths in the U.S. by the year 2065.

The study analyzed data, including heat index records, for the months of May-September from the years 2008-2019 and used it to create a predictive model for the years 2036–2065. The results estimated a 2.6 times greater risk of heat-related heart disease deaths for the general population and about a 3 times higher risk for older and Black adults.

To combat the effects of extreme heat, the study authors recommend cooling measures – like planting trees or using heat-reflective materials – be taken in cities and that individuals with underlying health conditions exercise special caution during heat waves.

“The number of cardiovascular events due to heat affects a small proportion of adults,” said Lawrence J. Fine, M.D., “but this research shows how important it is for those with underlying risks to take extra steps to avoid extreme temperatures."

Willow Bark Shows Antiviral Activity Against the Flu, COVID

Hot water extracts of willow bark (Salix spp.) have demonstrated antiviral properties against both enveloped coronaviruses – responsible for colds and COVID – and non-enveloped enteroviruses – responsible for the flu and meningitis – in a recent study.

Willow bark has long been used in traditional medicine and contains a variety of plant compounds, including a precursor to the active ingredient in aspirin, that have already contributed to modern medicine. However, its antiviral potential has remained largely unexplored.

The latest study sought to determine antiviral activity by testing willow bark extract against several enterovirus and coronavirus strains. Not only did the extract inhibit viral activity, it also did not harm cells being attacked by the viruses and effectively protected them from infection.

These results are very preliminary but still promising, especially because there are currently no treatments that work directly against enteroviruses. Interestingly, researchers found that individual components of willow bark did not possess the same antiviral activity as the hot water extract, suggesting that multiple compounds work synergistically to fight viruses.

Is Your Cookware Toxic?

Are you one of many people using cookware laced with toxic “forever chemicals”?

Most conventional nonstick cookware contains these harmful “forever” chemicals— known as PFAS— that are now linked to cancer, hormone disruption, autoimmune issues, and more. These toxins can off-gas as toxic fumes when pans containing them are heated AND leach into food, particularly if your pans are scratched or damaged. This is exactly why Chef’s Foundry developed a line of completely non-toxic ceramic cookware called the P600 Cookware range. It’s made with a revolutionary new ceramic coating that produces a natural nonstick surface and is resistant to cracking, chipping, and discoloration. Plus, it won’t off-gas or leach toxins into your food.

7 Sneaky Causes of Constipation (That Aren’t Food-Related)

A low-fiber diet is often a main culprit behind constipation, but it isn’t the only cause. Not getting enough exercise and not staying hydrated can also cause your digestive system to get backed up as can stress. Certain medications and even supplements – especially those containing iron or calcium – contribute to constipation and so do a number of medical conditions, including pelvic floor disorders. Sometimes, simply changing your routine will cause a digestive slow down. (More)

Toxic Chemicals Can Transfer to Recycled Plastics

Recycling is often promoted as a solution to the plastic pollution crisis, but a recent study found that recycled plastics can contain hundreds of toxic chemicals, including pesticides and pharmaceuticals. The study authors cite the large number (over 13,000) of chemicals used in plastic production as part of the problem as well as other chemical residues that accumulate during the recycling process. They call for toxic plastic chemicals to be rapidly phased out and state that “there are no plastics that can be deemed safe or circular.” (More)

Mindfulness May Aid Substance Use Treatment, Help Prevent Relapse

Mindfulness, which involves a focus on being fully present and an awareness of thoughts and feelings, is increasingly being used as a complementary therapy for a range of health issues. Some recent research has shown that it may be beneficial for those trying to overcome substance use disorders by helping participants to act less frequently on impulses and implement coping strategies that help to prevent relapses. Alternating Caffeine and Alcohol Is a Bad Habit for Sleep Quality, Quantity

For many people who get insufficient or poor quality sleep, drinking caffeine during the day to stay awake and alcohol at night to fall asleep is quite common. Unfortunately, however, this combo is likely to only make things worse, since higher daytime caffeine intake is linked to a decrease in sleep duration and alcohol decreases sleep quality. Though the caffeine/alcohol cycle might feel beneficial in the short-term, finding alternatives for better sleep is key for long-term health. (More)

Top Benefits AND Downsides of Eating Spicy Foods

Capsaicin is the name of the compound found in hot peppers that is used in all kinds of seasonings to spice up food. The good news is that capsaicin is linked to a number of health benefits like better cholesterol levels and heart health, boosted metabolism, and even pain relief (mainly from topical capsaicin use). On the flip side, capsaicin and spicy foods can irritate the digestive tract – especially for those with digestive disorders – and may trigger acid reflux. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

The human brain is composed of approximately 40% gray matter and 60% white matter. Gray matter contains large numbers of neurons, which process and send information throughout the body, while white matter is largely a network of nerve fibers that links different parts of the brain.
